As summer break gets underway, the Sacramento City Unified School District is once again opening its doors to help ensure children continue to have access to healthy meals.

Beginning Monday, June 22, SCUSD Nutrition Services is launching its annual Summer Food Service Program, offering free meals to all children and teens 18 years old and younger at more than 50 locations across Sacramento throughout the summer.

The district says the program is designed to help families bridge the gap when school cafeterias close for the season and to ensure children continue receiving nutritious meals while school is out.

At participating sites, breakfast will be served from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., followed by lunch service beginning at noon. Meals are provided at no cost, and families do not need to complete an application or show proof of income to participate. Children also do not need to be enrolled in Sacramento City Unified to receive meals.

SCUSD’s Central Kitchen and Nutrition Services teams begin preparing meals early each morning to serve families across the region. At Oak Ridge Elementary, staff start arriving around 7 a.m. to prepare hot meals before breakfast service begins.
